TNO - the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research

TNO is the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research and was founded in 1932. TNO is a knowledge organisation for companies, governmental bodies and public organisations. The daily work of some 4,500 employees is to create, develop, and apply scientific knowledge in various domains ranging from industry to society aspects. TNO works on seven central research themes. One of these themes is “Mobility”, comprising topics as (intelligent) vehicle technology, ITS, environment and human factors in transport. Through the past decades, TNO has built extensive experience in the innovation and development of various mobility solutions, followed by the deployment of the acquired knowledge and created technology in practice.

TNO has departments focussing on the in-car platforms and applications, monitoring systems for intelligent infrastructures, independent advice and consultancy on long-term policy making, and human factors/human machine interfaces. TNO is secretary of the EARPA Taskforce safety and member of the ERTRAC Safety Working group. TNO was coordinator of the road safety relate EU integrated project APROSYS and participated in various traffic-safety related European projects, such as APROSYS, AIDE, CityMobil, SAFEPSOT, CVIS, eIMPACT, FESTA, PROLOGUE EuroFOT, DRIVE, DRIVE C2X and EcoDriver. Regarding vulnerable road users TNO is active in the GOAL project regarding elderly and various other projects regarding the safety of cyclists such as SaveCAP.
